Abstract

How have single document discoveries changed the way historians think about their research subjects, whether biographical or thematic? To what extent do the activities of antiquarians and archivists – through calendars, publications, and editions – conceal and / or enable the process of, and potential for, discovery? Can a fresh look at established evidence provide us to draw out new perspectives on material hidden in plain sight?

This session will allow presenters to discuss examples from their own research, where discoveries have changed their perceptions and altered the landscape of particular subjects or collections. Two papers consider new evidence and perspectives for appointments and dismissals of religious figures among the collegiate community at St George’s College, Windsor. The third paper examines the nature of historical discovery, and the interaction between historians and the archive in uncovering material hidden in plain sight.
