| Abstract | In the late Middle Ages, the contest for political power and a need for self-determination reached a further climax. Within the secular sphere, this session deals with uprisings, (armed) conflicts, and other disasters like famines and epidemics and their (legal) consequences from different perspectives and how they shaped the political self-image of all involved. Different points of view – from (arch)bishops, the bourgeoisie and city dwellers, to peasants – highlight the increasing assertion of different social groups and individuals as well as the resulting shift in power structures. Case studies range from Salzburg to Gurk (Carinthia) and illustrate the consequences of those conflicts for the dioceses and people alike. |
