| Abstract | This panel is devoted to evidence from medieval fisheries for natural and anthropic climate change.Changes in fish distribution and food habits in the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period provide us with a valuable window into climate shifts and responses to them. Panelists will discuss how the passage from the Medieval Warm Period to the Litle Ice Age created crises at different levels of severity and in different latitudes, drawing a particular contrast between England and Portugal. Changes in coastal morphodynamics, the incidence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), successionof recurrence of extreme weather events, food availability and fashions in fish consumption, and social-economic responses, are some of the topics that we want to bring to the discussion, in an interdisciplinary approach.
Keywords: Climate change; interdisciplinarity; England and Portugal; fisheries; food availability. |
