| Abstract | This session explores the role and representation of emotions at moments of psychological crisis in medieval literature. It develops current work on the history of emotions by approaching literature as a cultural witness to medieval emotional intelligence. The three speakers in this session consider how medieval authors portray mental breakdowns, how emotional trauma expresses itself in words and deeds, and how human emotions are projected on non-human agents. Drawing from Old English poetry, twelfth-century French romances and Old Irish saga, the papers in this session provide a wide-ranging scope to compare how authors made use of emotions in the context of crisis in medieval literature. |
