Abstract

This panel examines moments of crisis in the Old Norse hagiographies, from the personal (a mother witnessing her sons’ martyrdom) to the societal (religious conflict and war). The texts analysed include Nikulass saga erkibiskups, Máritíuss saga, and Gyðinga saga, alongside their Latin sources, exploring gender identity, translation, and palaeography. Crisis is at the heart of hagiography; this panel will examine pivotal moments within the Old Norse saints’ lives to enhance our understanding of this neglected area of Old Norse literature.
