Abstract

The Crusades not only brought about the creation of new polities and institutions, but numerous chronicles as well. Whether participants or outsiders, the authors of crusader chronicles aimed to provide their readers a broad education by providing lessons on military, cultural, and spiritual matters. The expansion of crusading beyond the Holy Land allowed this historiographical tradition to examine different regions such as the Baltic, Byzantium, and Occitania. This session treats crusader chronicles as historical objects of study, investigating how these works used the broader history of crusading for varying purposes.
