Abstract

This strand investigates how Merovingian authors constructed gender and gendered life cycles, and what these approaches and techniques tell us about the significance and mutability of gender in the past, present, and future of Gallic thinkers and their various imagined and intended audiences.

This session addresses narrative beyond the written word. May Peterson analyses the Sarcophagus of Chrodoara to consider the intersecting ways that female legacies were narrated after death, as the depiction of Chrodoara's body resisted time while her deeds and miracles extended beyond her own life cycle. Hope Williard considers textile work as a cycle of women's creativity and re-use, and asks how that was captured and narrated by poets from Ausonius to Venantius Fortunatus.
