Abstract

This session (II) is part of a session series (I – III). It will examine diverse actors and address social questions concerning the housing market in different cities. Three papers will be presented, progressing geographically from southern to northern Europe:

First, real estate dynamics in late 15th- and early 16th-century Lyon will be examined, offering an overview of various actors, including religious houses, the aristocracy, and emerging economic activities such as book production and silk fabric manufacturing, and their roles in shaping the city’s built environment. The second paper shifts north to Basel, focusing on a female monastery and its interactions with the urban housing market in the late medieval period. The analysis investigates not only the monastery's relationships with individual city dwellers but also its competition with other monastic institutions for real estate. Finally, the last paper explores the relationship between socio-occupational networks and urban space in late medieval Bruges, with particular attention to the locational patterns of leather industry craftsmen between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries.
