| Abstract | Karlštejn Castle and its inner decoration play an important role as a comparative analogy for medieval painting, iconography and architectural research in Central Europe and beyond. The study of several medieval painting cycles situated inside the castle with a high degree of preservation became the basis for knowledge of medieval painting in Central Europe, as well as workshops, organisations and formal or technical ties. As such, new revisions based on recent restoration surveys offer new insights into this theme that crosses interdisciplinary boundaries, and the new methodology envelops new questions that lead to the reconsideration of older sources. Papers will deal with new methodological issues and iconographic interpretations that the topic offers in the light of recent research. Zoë Opačić will present new ways of using Karlštejn's comparative possibilities to shed light on medieval art in Central Europe. Kateřina Kubínová will present a new interpretation of some recent discoveries in the Chapel of the Virgin Mary at Karlštejn. Barbora Uchytilová's paper focuses on the methods for interpreting the iconographic concept of the Adoration of the Three Kings as a Luxembourg motif. |
