Abstract

This session (III) is part of a session series (I – III). It will discuss digital approaches and methods used in ongoing historical projects and how they can influence our analysis on but also our thinking about history. GIS systems support visualizations of situations in cities, but they map on recent representations and don’t show the perspectives of medieval people about the city. Text recognition and information extraction allow the processing of vast masses of documents but require data modeling to build mental and data-based forms of representations of the past. These approaches empower and shape our capabilities to analyze the Medieval past, but still require knowledge and experience about the shortcomings and capabilities of the technological approaches. Based on three case studies, we want to discuss how and with what approaches what insights can be gained.
