Abstract

This is the second session in the strand on Single Combat in Late Ancient and Medieval Contexts. It foregrounds depictions from a variety of cultures: Late Roman, Georgian and Rus. The first paper considers the story of an apparition of Emperor Constantius II at the siege of Nisibis in 350. The second paper explores the interplay of mythological, biblical and historical narratives on late antique and early medieval Georgian art. The third paper analyses the narrative in The Primary Chronicle of a Rus youth beating a more physically imposing Pecheneg in the context of the literary, military and cultural history of early Rus.
