Abstract

The third session of the Mourning and Remembrance strand explores other forms of commemoration than funerary monuments. The first paper (Neves) uses written documents to investigate practices such as anointing the sick, burial practices and funeral ceremonies at Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra. The second paper (Gisseleire) looks at mortuary roles in female monastic communities and explores how these could be used to create a socially-validated identify for the deceased and a wider identity for the community. The final paper (Wahlgren-Smith) discusses the church records of Thomas Crockford, vicar of Fisherton Delamere (Wilts) as a highly individual form of commemoration, with particular focus on the narrative construction of age at death.
