Abstract

This session considers the reception in 19th-century Europe of Old English literature, with a particular focus on Beowulf. Paper a discusses the formation of the Old English canon, specifically in what ways scholars outside of the English-speaking world compiled readers and anthologies of Old English texts and how their choices may have differed from their Anglophone counterparts. Paper b focuses on the reception of Beowulf in Italy and addresses the first full Italian translation of Beowulf by Giusto Grion. Paper c analyses the impact of the pioneering scholarship on Beowulf by the Danish scholar N.F.S. Grundtvig.

[This is the first of a collection of three sessions on Old English in the long 19th century]
