Abstract

The first of two sessions, examining various aspects of Anglo-Scottish relations from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries. For the first session, the papers will examine, respectively: the relations and hostilities of England and Scotland within the late medieval earldom of Ulster; the archival, artistic and archaeological sources for the types of armour worn by Scottish and English soldiers during the Wars of Independence, during a fascinating period in the development of battlefield armour; and the oft-repeated suggestion that commoners were especially prominent in war in later medieval Scotland, with a discussion of the involvement of the Scottish lower orders in war, and their importance in military outcomes.
