Abstract

This panel addresses the continued desideratum in the study of early Irish Theology from multiple disciplinary perspectives, whilst finding the medium between ‘Iromania’ and ‘Irophobia’, with much of the relevant study to date written from narrow disciplinary and partisan perspectives. Papers are given from the fields of Theology, Liturgy, History and Literature.

The early Irish church has often been portrayed as heterodox, idiosyncratic and as insignificant, being called ‘pips on the ends of the earth’, whilst more recently faith leaders and politicians such as a French prime minister and Pope Benedict XVI consider it foundational to building a united Europe.
