Abstract

This session explores various socio-economic questions associated with life on three different 'Plantagenet borders' in the later Middle Ages. Papers will explore circumstances in Chester (on the hinterlands of Wales), along the frontier with Scotland, and in the cultural edgelands that separated, albeit uncertainly, Gaelic and Anglo-Ireland. The impact of warfare and raiding on community life will be considered alongside some of the legal measures taken to separate communities that appeared, from the perspective of the Plantagenet 'centre', to be politically different and, hence, suspect.
