Abstract

Medieval colophons offer a valuable yet problematic window into scribal culture. This session, drawing on two emerging databases (one of colophons in manuscripts held in Czech libraries and the other of colophons in the German language), presents the results of quantitative inquiry into their formulaicity, explores multilingualism, and critically examines the use of colophons as evidence for manuscript dating.
