Abstract

This session applies both lexical-semantic and literary-critical methodologies to Old Norse literature. The history of lexical and linguistic scholarship in Old Norse is well established and varied, and indeed excellent work has been done in this area. This session consists of papers that build on that long tradition by taking linguistic and lexical routes into Old Norse poetry and prose, paying particular attention to the literary and cultural payoffs that research can offer. The work engages with difficult, technical questions around grammar, syntax, linguistics, and semantics, all of which ultimately contributes to the appreciation of the prose and poetry as literature and cultural products.
