To mark the millennium anniversary of William the Conqueror’s birth, artist Tina Greene and archaeologist Chas Jones have put their capable heads together to design a tapestry depicting Matilda of Flanders’ gift of the battleship 'La Mora' to her husband William. With experienced gained from working on The Fulford Tapesty and The Battle Tapestry, this tapestry is directly inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry and great care has been taken to use authentic methods in its construction. The wool used for the embroidery is sourced exclusively from ancient breeds of sheep, processed and spun to the same specification as the early wool, and dyed with the same natural colours identified through analysis of the Bayeux Tapestry.

The International Medieval Congress is once again delighted to be able to host the tapestry as a work in progress and hands-on-history display. Part exhibit, part workshop, the stall illuminates the extensive experimental archaeology work done to produce the tapestry so far and allows you to directly contribute to the completion of the project. Rather than just simply viewing the tapestry and learning about the techniques involved in its construction, you are also invited to grab a needle and thread, practice your embroidery stitches on a sampler, and finally make your mark on the tapestry itself.

Once completed, the tapestry, along with your contributions, will take pride of place alongside the reconstruction of 'La Mora' itself in a brand-new museum in Honfleur.
